What is random chance?

Random chance is what can’t be controlled or predicted.  A great deal can be predicted like the movements of the celestial bodies.  This is then a matter of physics which can be calculated rather easily.  In the same way one can predict if a suggested machine has a chance of working.  Then it is a question about if it can practically be built.  Which is not always the case.  But then it is a matter of technology and not about physics.

On the other hand there are things such as when one throws a dice.  It can’t be controlled exactly what happens to it.  As such the dice’s result at a specific occasion can usually not be predicted.  For sure there are cheating dices having built-in weights.  If one’s opponent is not alert someone can use such.  In such cases that can be counteracted with transparent dices.  I think something comparable is possible in in other chance contexts too.

Much in biology has more in common with dice-throwing.  There are certain limits to the biologically possible.  However, within these limits it is often determined by random chance.  In addition there are consequences of what has already happened.  What happens to be available is what nature’s own processes have to work with.  Such can’t be changed afterwards.

Human societies have similarities with such biological systems.  They are to some extent limited by their physical environment.  But the environment does not determine what every single individual does.  Neither does our DNA determine such things in detail.  The human mind can’t be explained by any single factors.  Instead there are loads of factors affecting what a person does.  I think we to some extent can chose things too.  However, this capacity should neither be overestimated.
