Strangely, there are still people fearing Devil worshipers. Others are supposed to literarily worship the Christian Devil. Something which in turn would make people evil. That is associated with the myth of people behaving badly because they want to be evil. People behaving undesirably can have many causes. But I don’t think people destroy for destroying’s own sake. It simply don’t fill any function in evolutionary terms.
I think the idea has its origin in a medieval monk or priest. Such ideas from before the 19th century were outright misogynist. For this reason I don’t think any nun came up with it. Anyhow the person knew almost nothing about the human mind. Neither did he have any of idea of how much religions varied. He made a doomed attempt to explain the motivations of non-Christians. All information he had about them were distant rumours. Moreover, those rumours came from the non-Christians’ enemies. They were not only corrupted but depicted as evil. He then imagined ill will enhanced by reverse Christianity. Such a belief has never been practiced in organised form.
The large increase in witch hunts was result of the Reformation. Various churches competed in finding and punishing scapegoats. Consequentially they reached their peak during the 16th and 17th centuries. Some increase can be seen during the later half of the 15th century. The last one took place in England as late as 1750. What people was accused of was a deal with the Devil. It was believed to give magical ability to cause trouble to others. Witness accounts were violently forced into that type of myths. Such originally arising in a severely misdirected attempt to explain the motivations of non-Christians. Superstition and folk belief were corrupted to more or less match those.
I think the witch hunts ceased because the standard of living rose. This gave a reduced need to single out scapegoats. After some time without reports the relevant authorities stopped taking any new ones seriously. If any more turned up all became written off. Naturally there was never any ability to magically harm others. However, this insight did not spread until after the witch hunts had stopped.
Several generations later the witch hunts were misunderstood as aimed at a real religious group. Certain people believed that accused witches had practiced a pre-Christian religion. No naturally developed religion has ever matched reverse Christianity. To me it is obvious people did not worship a single god. Much less one with characteristics ascribed to the Devil during the witch hunts. Stanton Levey built his Satanism on that wrongful idea.
Around 1980 the religion he had founded started attracting attention. By then nursery schools had become common in several countries. Still it was not that long ago they had become this. Some still wondered if they could trust nursery school personnel. At the same time psychoanalysis had mutated into the belief that sexual abuse was the cause of all kinds of mental problems. Badly thought out interrogation methods led to loads of accusations. Adults with responsibility for children were claimed to abuse them ritually. Single individuals could be accused of being serial killers. That and many other accusations would have other consequences. Evidence of these other consequences never seem have been presented. Sometimes the children would have died from injuries before they had time to give their witness accounts. The interrogators did not realise this.
Of cause it occurs children are sexually abused. But the willingness to do it is not particularly common. Less than one percent have sexual attraction to children before or in early puberty. Moreover, it is twice as common among men as among women. There occur networks of such individuals. However, I don’t think they have to do with other forms of cruelty. Rather their members are unaware of the harm they cause. They ascribe to far too young children their own adult sexuality. The children have not yet developed such.
In the same way serial killers is something existing in reality. I think their prevalence is about one in 10 million. Which is very much rarer than I have heard people imagine. They are motivated by some weird fantasy only making sense to them personally. That they would organise murders with others is then patently absurd.
I neither think Satanists are more prone to cruelty than other humans. They just adapt symbols traditionally associated with evilness. Certain is that the Christian Devil is not what they worship. Whatever they are worshiping they have a different view of it. There are many independent groups calling themselves Satanists. Most such group don’t worship anything at all. Instead they are LGBT-activists disguising themselves as religion to get juridical advantages. I don’t view such activists as in any way evil either.
Finally there are musicians having made it into their thing to frighten. Many use the same symbols as the Satanists do. This does not mean that they or their fans would worship the Devil. Much less them being more dangerous than others of their class or age groups. Instead it is an aesthetic they have adapted. There is a large overlap with the music style of metal. Which is just one of all the styles claimed to cause all the problems in society. As if these problems had not existed before this particular music style.
